1. What is 3G and how is it different from 4G?
3G stands for third-generation mobile technology, offering moderate-speed internet. 4G (fourth generation) provides much faster internet speeds, better voice quality through VoLTE, and improved network reliability.
2. Why is Vodafone Qatar shutting down the 3G network?
In line with the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) guidelines, Vodafone Qatar and all telecom operators in the country are retiring 3G services by 31 December 2025. This allows us to enhance the 4G/5G network experience and reallocate spectrum for better speed and capacity.
3. What is VoLTE and why does it matter?
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) allows high-quality voice calls over the 4G network. After 3G shutdown, only phones supporting VoLTE will be able to make calls unless they fallback to 2G. VoLTE does not consume your data allowance for calls & offers excellent voice call clarity.
4. How do I check if VoLTE is enabled on my device?
On iPhones:
Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Select '4G, VoLTE On'.
On Android:
Go to Settings > Mobile Network > Preferred network type > Enable VoLTE or Enhanced Calling.

5. What happens if I still use a 3G device after the shutdown?
You will not be able to make or receive calls, texts, or use mobile data. You must upgrade to a 4G/5G device to stay connected.
6. Will I lose my mobile number or plan if I upgrade my device?
No. You can continue with your current number and plan when switching to a new 4G or 5G phone. All benefits included in your plan will also remain intact.
7. Do I need to change my SIM card too?
In most cases, no. However, if your SIM is incredibly old or incompatible with 4G you can replace your SIM for free at any Vodafone store.
8. What types of devices are affected beyond mobile phones?
Devices like medical alarms, smartwatches, tablets, modems, smart meters, and embedded IoT modules that rely on 3G will stop working unless they are upgraded to 4G/5G-compatible models.
9. Will I still be able to make emergency calls (e.g., 999) with a 3G phone?
No. After 31 December 2025, 3G-only phones will no longer support any call services, including emergency calls. Upgrading is essential.
10. My phone shows a 4G signal – why did I still get a message about 3G shutdown?
Some phones use 4G for internet but still rely on 3G for voice calls or emergency access. This can affect voice quality and calling ability after the 3G shutdown.
11. What if I cannot afford a new phone right now?
Vodafone Qatar offers a range of affordable smartphones, and you can visit Vodafone Website or a Vodafone store to explore check for amazing offers. You can visit shop here.
12. Will I face coverage issues when switching to a 4G or 5G device?

13. What about international roaming?
Many countries around the world have already retired 3G network and many are in the process of retiring 3G. To ensure seamless roaming, you must use a 4G or 5G phone with VoLTE support.
14. Will I be charged for transitioning off 3G?
No transition fee will apply in Qatar. Vodafone is here to support your move to 4G/5G with helpful staff and affordable upgrade plans.
