Vodafone Increases Support to Pakistan Flood Relief
23 August 2010: Recognising the dire need of flood victims in Pakistan, Vodafone Qatar has decided to increase its support to aid relief efforts for the duration of the holy month of Ramadan.
For each call customers make to Pakistan, Vodafone will now double the former donation of 5 Dirhams to 10 Dirhams towards aid relief efforts.
The total amount raised will be given to the Qatar Red Crescent who have been actively involved in the post flood relief operations including distribution of food and non food Items, health relief and recovery and rehabilitation
"We feel it is our duty to help Pakistan in its time of need. Customers drive our donations and we are happy that with every call to Pakistan they are also making a direct contribution to flood relief efforts," said Ms. Luisa Gentile, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Vodafone Qatar.
"We thank Vodafone Qatar for their efforts to raise money to aid relief efforts in Pakistan and ask that more people and companies help out as well," said Dr. Amer Melhem Disaster Management Coordinator International Relief Department, Qatar Red Crescent.
"Assessments are ongoing to establish the degree to which affected populations are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. The official death toll has risen to 1,343, with 1,588 people now reported as injured and several thousand missing. The latest National Disaster Management Authority report indicates that over 722,000 houses have been either damaged or destroyed," continued Dr. Amer Melhem
