TEAMS BATTLE IT OUT IN INDIE FIKRA: APPATHON 2012- THE 48 HOUR MOBILE APP CODING COMPETITION CREATED BY VODAFONE QATAR AND QITCOM
Doha, 6 March 2012: Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012 kicked off on Monday with teams competing for cash and prizes in their quest to create the best new mobile apps in Qatar. Taking place during the QITCOM conference and exhibition, Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012 was created by Vodafone Qatar in partnership with QITCOM. The event provides mobile entrepreneurs with a unique environment for innovation, coaching and long-term mentorship.
Working to inspire the local mobile developer community, specifically in the areas of Arabic content and content made in and for Qatar, Vodafone arranged for on-site coaching and mentorship throughout the 48 hour event with leading industry experts from Vodafone Group and Research in Motion (RIM). Hemant Madan, Head of Developer Marketing for Vodafone Group and responsible for building up and scaling the highly successful developer business at Vodafone, is joined by Lewa Albukhait, Senior Alliance Manager ME for RIM; providing Indie Fikra participants with a series of mentorship sessions to guide the developers towards creating impactful and engaging mobile apps.
“Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012 is all about creating an environment for innovation and giving the great developer talent in Qatar an opportunity to show their entrepreneurial spirit,” stated Khalifa Saleh Haroon, Head of Interactive and Innovation for Vodafone Qatar. “What we’re seeing the teams create is truly inspiring – after the first 24 hours you can really feel the passion for what they do.”
With a variety of apps—from mCommerce to mHealth and flash sales to mobile games—the teams competing in Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012 are flexing their programming muscle by building working prototypes for new mobile apps in just 48 hours.

Winners of Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012 win not only receive cash and prizes, but also inclusion in ictQATAR's start-up incubation programme Dajtala; providing long-term support for the winning entrepreneurs over the next two years.
Visitors to Vodafone's booth, located at area K30, can enjoy a look into the creative work happening during the appathon via live video streaming. Winners of Indie Fikra: Appathon 2012 will be unveiled at the Vodafone booth on Wednesday 7 March.
